What It Is
As the demands and pressures on students continue to increase, and the involvement and advancement of technology happening at such a rapid pace, it is no surprise we are seeing the mental health of our students taking a toll.
Academic coaches work one-on-one with students to assist them in better time management and organizational strategies and assist in devising a customized plan of action to meet individual academic goals. Much like athletic coaches, academic coaches provide holistic assistance to help students prepare for and navigate the challenges that are presented during their academic career.

What It Is Not
Academic coaches do not do the work for the student. It is our goal to produce independent learners that can take the skills learned through coaching and apply it to all areas of their lives, including their future career.
We are not here to take the struggle away from students, as that struggle is how students learn and grow. We simply make sure the work and energy are being put into areas that will give students the most gain. As the old saying goes, work smarter, not harder. Too often teachers do not have the time, energy, or bandwidth to assist students in the critical professional skills needed to be successful, which is where an academic coach comes in.

While a tutor might be able to assist students in catching up in a specific subject area, such as math or reading, academic coaches can help students become self-driven, confident individuals ready to tackle any challenge that might arise during their academic career.

My Story
After obtaining my Master’s in Arts and Teaching from Lewis and Clark College, I spent the next seven years as a science educator at the intermediate and secondary levels. After seeing a growing number of students struggling with executive functioning skills, I became frustrated that the increased demands on teachers did not allow any time to provide students the monitoring and feedback the students and their families deserve. So I started AccessEd, which aims to provide assistance in navigating the education system all while learning and applying critical executive skills for lifelong success to students located in the Vancouver-Portland metro areas.
Along with my teaching career, I have tutored a number of students ranging from elementary to college aged. What I love most about tutoring and academic coaching is it allows for one-on-one undisrupted time with a student that is nearly impossible in a traditional classroom setting. Not only does this help me better connect and tailor my strategies to ensure the student does not fall through the cracks, but when done well, you can empower a student to take charge of their learning and begin to hold themselves accountable. Created self-driven, lifelong learners is the ultimate goal of AccessEd.
